Woke up this morning looking forward to what was in store today.  Packed up camp and headed over to race site (same location as yesterday) early to get a preview of the course.  The course was somewhat different in that there was less single track (maybe 1/4 mile less), a long steep run up and a two section area of silty beach sand.
Start time was at 11:30 and this time I put myself on the front.  Gun goes off and I’m second wheel into the double track of rough uneven surface with many sharp rocks along the path.  I know I want to be first in the sand section so I move to the front and hammer my way through each 40-50 ft sections…uh oh…I’ve gotta gap and looks like I might be able to extend it if I press it.  I don’t and three guys make contact with me and we all hammer along to the single track segment of the course.  At this point I’m fourth wheel going in, but I’m OK with that figuring we are all similar strength.  Well third wheel failed in the single track…he slows down as the other two guys roll off (eventually finish 1,2) so now I’m stuck waiting till we are outta single track.  We hit the run up and I feel good, but so does 3rd wheel too.  We race together until 1.5 laps to go and 5th place makes contact and I start to unravel a bit.  Last lap comes and wheels are coming off the bus…now it’s just salvage a top 10.  I finished 9th and am very pleased that legs and body are coming together.  Heat was certainly a factor today along with the constant dust, but after a few more races to dial it in I’m on track now.
